Kaunas

Kaunas is the cradle of Lithuanian culture, traditions and history, the second city in terms of its size and importance of Lithuania, having an exclusive history, significant on the national level in its geographical location as well as the economic position.

It is not only the city of old traditions, but it is also a large centre of science, business, industry, sports and culture, the former provisional capital of Lithuania.

Citizens

Kaunas City citizens make up 10,6 per cent of all the population of Lithuania. With regards to nationality, 93 per cent of citizens are Lithuanians, 4 per cent – Russians, other nationalities comprise 3 per cent of Kaunas population. Today Kaunas is one of the most densely inhabited towns of Lithuania. According to the number of ethnic inhabitants, Kaunas is the largest city in the Baltic States.

Communication

Kaunas is easily reached by various means of transport. The oldest means of transport – since the Medieval times – is the water route transport on the river Nemunas. The city also has the oldest inter-urban and international bus and railway stations, 2 passenger river ports, 1 international and 2 local air-ports. Due to the convenient geographical location, Kaunas is connected by land roads with the most important centres of foreign countries and Lithuania. Now the European highway crosses through Kaunas.

Sport

Various branches of sport were started to be cultivated in Kaunas already in the pre-war period. In  1921, Kaunas City Municipality leased a parcel of land to the Lithuanian Physical Training Union (LPTU) where a football square and running tracks were installed. In 1924–1925, by the initiative of the chairperson of the LPTU Steponas Darius, the first sports stadium in Lithuania was constructed.

In 1934, the Physical Training Palace was built near the stadium – the present Sports University of Lithuania, where almost all branches of sports included into the Olympics programme are cultivated. In 1939, Kaunas Sports Hall, the first arena in Europe built specially for basketball – was opened in the city. Basketball became especially important in Lithuania after the national team won the second European Basketball championship in 1937. The oldest and the most awarded men‘s basketball club is „Žalgiris“ of Kaunas.

In August 2011, the new Žalgiris Arena was built up on the Nemunas island, where the final matches of the European Men Basketball championship took place in 2011.

During the inter-war years, football also started to be played in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Men Football team played its first international match in 1923 in Kaunas. Clubs of Kaunas became champions of Lithuanian football league for many times. The multiple champion of Lithuania is the football club FBK Kaunas. In order to prepare football players of the high sports mastership who could join the Lithuanian national football team in the future, the National Football Academy was established in Kaunas in 2006.

Track-and-field athletics

Track-and-field athletics, just like all other branches of sports of Lithuania, was born in Kaunas, as well. The first track-and-field championship of Lithuania took place in Kaunas in 1921. The first athletes represented our country in the summer Olympic Games in 1928 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In 1934, Lithuanian athletes took part in the first European Track-and-Filed championship in Turin, Italy. The most famous track-and-field athletes also graduated from the only Sports University of Lithuania that is established in Kaunas:  the multiple Olympic and world champion, the discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna;

Architecture and culture

Four stages of the historical development resulted in different urban zones in the territorial structure of cultural heritage of Kaunas City. The city is proud of the compact, well-preserved Old Town with many cultural and architectural monuments: Kaunas Castle (the 13-17th centuries), the Gothic House of Thunder (15-16th century), Churches of St. Gertrude and Vytautas Magnus (constructions started in 1400), Kaunas City Hall (the 16-18th centuries), etc.

The Lithuanian Bank Palace, the Military Office, the Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Crafts, Kaunas Central Post Office, the Palace of the Chief Tribunal, Kaunas Fire Department, Agricultural Palace, Kaunas Sports Hall, many offices, commercial banks, museums, higher education schools were built in  Up-Town (the New Town) of Kaunas during the inter-war period.

Kaunas is a large centre of culture. There are 26 libraries in Kaunas (the largest of them is Kaunas County Public Library), 7 professional and 10 amateur theatres, 20 folklore groups, the groups of professional circus – the Baltic Circus, and professional jazz – Kaunas Big Band - the only professional groups of this field in Lithuania. The most important state theatres in Kaunas are the Music Theatre, Drama Theatre and Puppet Theatre. The modern dance theatre „Aura“, Kaunas Pantomime Theatre, the Small Theatre, the Chamber Theatre are also established in the city. Kaunas State Choir has been arranging concerts since 1969, and Kaunas Symphonic Orchestra – since 2005.  Kaunas Centre of Cultures of Various Nations was opened in 2004.

Kaunas citizens and guests of the city love the international Classical Music Festival of Pažaislis that lasts for the three summer months and attracts representatives of elite music of the world. Jazz lovers get together at “Kaunas Jazz” festival. And one can listen to the sounds of carillon music in the yard of the War Museum.

Lovers of opera and operetta enjoy the international festival „Operetta in Kaunas Castle“, dance enthusiasts love the international modern dance festival organized by the modern dance theatre „Aura“. The folk music festival „Atataria lamzdžiai“ takes place at the end of May, and in the middle of August – the Medieval festival „Hansa Kaunas“. Other famous events are: drum music festival „Drum please“[24], the non-traditional folklore festival „Suklegos“, the international festival of drama theatres[25], the modern music festival „Iš arti“, the photo-art festival „Kaunas Photo“[26], the international sacral music festival, and Kaunas Cinema Festival.

One of the most famous cultural events in Kaunas is the birthday of the city (as announced on December 3, 1998, by the decision of Kaunas City Council), celebrated on May 20. Namely on this day in 1463 the Duke Kazimieras Jogailaitis confirmed and broadened the Magdeburg rights of the city. The main events of the festival take place on the streets of the Old Town, near the Kaunas Castle as well as other places of the city.
